In the case of [redacted], I requested a copy of his manuscript to proofread, and a tour of his hometown the next time I visit. Fair trade, I think. 

I really like the idea of trading things for information. There are topics I would like to learn from a pro, but how can an individual afford to hire them to consult or tutor?
